You love the idea of sharing private vows before your ceremony. Just the two of you, away from a room full of guests. An intimate moment to share amongst the hustle and bustle of the day.

But you also really want that moment.

The one where the doors opens, you walk down the aisle, and you and your partner see each other for the first time.

Well, I've got some good news; you don't have to choose.

That's right. You can have both.

Private Vows Without Seeing Each Other

One of my favourite alternatives to a traditional first look is exchanging private vows before your wedding ceremony - without actually seeing one another.

You can stand back-to-back, on opposite sides of a doorway, around the corner of a building or a tree. The options are endless.

You still get to hear each other's voices, holds hands, laugh, cry and share something incredibly personal together.

But the dress? The suit? The whole oh my gosh, we're actually getting married moment?

That stays a surprise.

And when you finally see each other at the ceremony, you still get that traditional first-look-down-the-aisle moment you've been dreaming of.

Why I Love Private Wedding Vows

Wedding days can be beautifully chaotic.

There are family members everywhere, timelines to follow, photos to take, people asking questions, and a whole lot happening around you. It can be surprisingly difficult to find even five minutes where it's truly just the two of you.

A private vow exchange creates that little pocket of quiet.

There's no audience. No microphone. No worrying about whether anyone can hear you. And no pressure to keep your vows short, polished or composed.

You can just be yourselves.

From a photographer's prospective, these moments are also some of my favourite to document. The nervous hand squeezes. The laughing halfway through because one of you promised you weren't going to cry. They're the little moments that feel like big moments because they are incredibly honest.

But Doesn't That Ruin The Reveal?

Not at all - and that's exactly why I love this idea.

If seeing each other for the first time walking down the aisle is important to you, you can absolutely protect that moment.

Make Your Wedding Day Feel Like Your Own

Trends come and go, but your wedding day doesn't need to follow a formula. You can skip a first look. Or, you can have one. You can read your vows privately, in front of everyone, or both. It's completely whatever you want.

If the idea of sharing a few quiet minutes together before your ceremony feels right, but you've been hesitant because you don't want to lost that emotional walk down the aisle, private vows without a first look might be exactly what you're looking for.

As a wedding photographer, one of my favourite parts of helping couples plan their photography timeline is finding ways to create space for moments like these. The ones that aren't just beautiful in photographs, but actually let you experience your wedding day.

Because years from now, I want you to remember not just what everything looked like, but remember what it felt like.
