There’s something about fall engagement sessions that just feels romantic.

The golden leaves, cozy layers, softer light, and that little bit of crispness in the air make this one of my favourite times of year to photograph couples in Edmonton.

For this recent engagement session, we leaned into everything I love about fall — warm colours, natural movement, and plenty of candid moments in between the more traditional portraits. The result was a gallery that felt relaxed, romantic, and completely true to them.

If you’re considering fall engagement photos of your own, here are a few things that can help you plan your session.

When is the best time for fall engagement photos in Edmonton?

Edmonton’s fall season is beautiful — but it can also be incredibly short.

If you’re dreaming of yellow and golden foliage, mid-September through early October is generally the window I would keep in mind. The exact timing changes every year depending on temperatures, and how quickly the leaves turn.

Because our fall colours can disappear surprisingly quickly, I recommend booking your photographer ahead of time rather than waiting until the trees have already changed.

And don’t worry if your session lands slightly before or after peak foliage. Fall photographs aren’t only about colourful leaves. The softer grasses, earthy tones, changing landscape and cozy wardrobe options can still create that beautiful autumn feeling.

What should you wear for a fall engagement session?

You don't necessarily need to dress in traditional “fall colours” to make your photos feel seasonal.

I recommend choosing neutral or earthy tones that complement the landscape — creams, browns, camel, olive, muted rust, denim, black and warm neutrals all photograph beautifully.

Texture is also your friend. Think knits, wool coats, suede, denim or layered pieces that add some visual interest without becoming distracting.

Most importantly, you should still feel like yourselves.

Choose outfits that feel elevated but still comfortable enough that you can walk, sit, cuddle, laugh and move around together.

Should you bring two outfits?

You absolutely can.

If time allows, one dressier outfit and one more relaxed outfit can give you two different looks within the same gallery. It can be especially nice if you're planning to use your engagement photos for save-the-dates, your wedding website, prints or other wedding details.

That said, an outfit change isn't necessary. One outfit that you both feel amazing in is more than enough.

What time of day is best for engagement photos?

If we have flexibility, I love scheduling outdoor engagement sessions closer to golden hour — the period before sunset when the light becomes warmer and softer.

But beautiful photographs aren't limited to one specific time of day.

Location, tree coverage, weather and the direction of the light all play a role. Part of my job as your photographer is finding the light and positioning you in a way that photographs beautifully, so you don't need to figure that part out yourself.

Cloudy fall days can actually be gorgeous for engagement photos, too (which is exactly what we had the day of this session - overcast). The softer light can create really flattering skin tones and that slightly moodier, romantic feeling that works so well with autumn.

What if we're awkward in front of the camera?

This might be one of the most common things couples tell me before their engagement session.

You don't need to know how to pose.

Rather than spending the entire session putting you into one rigid pose after another, I like to give enough direction that you never have to wonder what to do — while still leaving room for the little moments that happen naturally.

We might start with a more traditional portrait and then add movement. Walking together. Pulling each other closer. Talking. Laughing. Looking at each other instead of constantly looking at my camera.

Those in-between moments are often some of my favourites.

My goal is for your gallery to have a mix of photographs that feel polished enough to frame and yet candid enough to actually feel like you.

How do you choose an engagement photo location?

The prettiest location isn't automatically the best location.

I look at the light, scenery, time of day, how busy an area tends to be, and how much variety we can create without spending half of your session travelling from one spot to another.

I also love when a location has some meaning to the couple.

Maybe it's somewhere you spend a lot of time together, the neighbourhood where you live, somewhere connected to your relationship, or simply a landscape that feels like you.

For fall engagement photos around Edmonton, we have everything from natural areas and river valley trails to open fields, urban architecture and more editorial downtown locations.

One of the biggest benefits of an engagement session? Use it as a wedding-day practice run.

It's a chance for us to work together before your wedding.

You'll get a feel for how I direct and photograph you, and I'll learn more about the two of you — how you naturally interact, what makes you laugh, and what kind of direction makes you feel most comfortable.

By the time your wedding day arrives, being in front of my camera will feel much more familiar.

And that's one less thing to think about on an already very big day.

Planning your own Edmonton engagement session?

Whether you're picturing golden fall leaves, summer greenery, a snowy winter session or something a little more urban, your engagement photos should feel like the two of you.

Choose a season and setting you love, wear something that makes you feel confident, and leave the posing to me.

I'll take care of the rest.
